Bur Shapes and Sizes

Stone Setting Shape

stone-setting
Stone setting burs are primarily used by jewelers. The top of the bur has a cone shape similar to a hart bur, but the sides are straight instead of angled. These burs are made from steel and are available in a wide range of diameters.

Stone setting burs are commonly used for setting round, symmetrical diamonds. They are used to cut seats for tube, bezel, and prong settings. Because they have an ideal angle for round stones, they are often used to rough out a seat for a round stone that may later be refined with a hart bur. The stone setting bur size chosen must match the stone size exactly. If the stone is asymmetrical or the size doesn't match, the stone setting bur's use may be somewhat restricted.
